New learning module on Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) - Nouveau module d'apprentissage sur la spectroscopie à infrarouge (NIRS)

New section dedicated to point of care ultrasound (POCUS) and targeted neonatal echocardiography (TnECHO). The TnECHO section outlines new modules on normal neonatal echocardiography and will soon include cases. 

Nouvelle section dédiée à l'échographie ciblée (POCUS) et à l'échocardiographie néonatale ciblée (TnECHO). La section TnECHO présente de nouveaux modules sur l'échocardiographie néonatale normale et comprendra bientôt des cas.

We have added a section on congenital heart defects. There is also a new learning module on pulmonary hypertension assessment.

Nous avons ajouté une section sur les malformations cardiaques congénitales. Il existe également un nouveau module d'apprentissage sur l'évaluation de l'hypertension pulmonaire.

We are currently looking for healthy newborns and children aged 4 months, 9 months, 3 years, 5 years, 7 years, 9 years, 11 years, 13 years, 15 years and 17 years as part of two studies at the Montreal Children's Hospital. The purpose of these studies is to assess cardiac function and pulmonary pressures by performing a cardiac ultrasound of about twenty minutes and which involves only one appointment. An ultrasound is painless and safe.

These ultrasounds will allow us to compare these data with vulnerable populations such as children born extremely premature and children born with a diaphragmatic hernia. We use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques. Participation is on a voluntary basis, any discovery requiring a more in-depth analysis will be referred to cardiology. Help us help the kids!

*** Note to high school students: participating in this study as a healthy subject on a voluntary basis may give you 3 hours of volunteering if you are part of an international program.

Nous sommes présentement à la recherche de nouveau-nés et d’enfants en santé âgés de 4 mois, 9 mois, 3 ans, 5 ans, 7 ans, 9 ans, 11 ans, 13 ans, 15 ans et 17 ans dans la cadre de deux études à l’hôpital de Montréal pour enfants. Ces études ont comme missions d’évaluer la fonction cardiaque et les pressions pulmonaires en effectuant une échographie cardiaque d’une vingtaine de minutes et qui n’implique qu’un seul déplacement. Une échographie est sans douleur et sans danger. 

Ces échographies nous permettront de comparer ces données à des populations vulnérables comme les enfants nés extrêmement prématurés et les enfants nés avec une hernie diaphragmatique.  Nous utilisons un appareil et des techniques à la fine pointe de la technologie. La participation est sur une base volontaire, toute découverte fortuite nécessitant une analyse plus approfondie sera référé en cardiologie. Aidez-nous à aider les enfants!

*** Avis aux étudiants du secondaire: la participation à cette étude en guise de sujet sain sur une  base volontaire peut équivaloir à 3 heures de bénévolat dans le cadre d'un programme international.

• We are happy to share with you that the second phase of the study Pulmonary vascular disease and cardiac performance in extreme preterm infants: A prospective cross-sectional study will be initiated early next week at the CHU of Quebec. We are also expecting to launch the study later this season at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital and CHU Ste-Justine. These hospitals will collaborate in the intra-hospital part of this project.

     Our study started here at the Montreal Children's Hospital in October 2019 and despite the slowdown caused by Covid-19,          132 patients have since been recruited, and more than 200 cardiac ultrasounds have been performed as part of this study. 

This is prospective cohort study where standard and advanced echocardiographic imaging is used for the following aims: Aim 1: To describe the prevalence and severity of cardiac dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension for the extreme premature population, in different independent neonatal and pediatric age groups, using a prospective study design during a 3-year period. Aim 2:  To describe the comorbidities and neuro-developmental profile of these populations at the individual time-points and put this profile in the context of their cardiac performance by echocardiography.  

• Nous sommes heureux de partager avec vous que la deuxième phase de l'étude Maladie vasculaire pulmonaire et performance cardiaque chez les nourrissons extrêmement prématurés: une étude prospective sera initiée au début de la semaine prochaine au CHU de Québec. Nous prévoyons également lancer l'étude plus tard cette saison à l'hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont et au CHU Ste-Justine. Ces hôpitaux collaboreront dans la partie intra-hospitalière de ce projet.

Notre étude a débuté ici à l'Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants en octobre 2019 et malgré le ralentissement causé par Covid-19, 132 patients ont depuis été recrutés et plus de 200 échographies cardiaques ont été réalisées dans le cadre de cette étude.

Il s'agit d'une étude dans laquelle l'imagerie échocardiographique standard et avancée est utilisée pour les objectifs suivants: Objectif 1: Décrire la prévalence et la gravité du dysfonctionnement cardiaque et de l'hypertension pulmonaire pour la population prématurée extrême et ce dans différents groupes d'âge néonatals et pédiatriques indépendants; avec une étude prospective d’une période de 3 ans. Objectif 2: Décrire les comorbidités et le profil neuro-développemental de ces populations à différents moments et mettre ce profil dans le contexte de leur performance cardiaque par échocardiographie

• Thank you to the Department of Pediatrics at McGill University for the grant awarded to the research project "Pulmonary vascular disease and cardiac performance in extremely premature newborns: A prospective study." This grant was awarded as part of a competition for pilot studies.

• Merci au département de Pédiatrie de l'Université McGill  pour la subvention accordée au projet de recherche "Maladie vasculaire pulmonaire et performance cardiaque chez le nouveau-né extrêmement prématuré: Une étude prospective." Cette subvention a été octroyée dans le cadre d'une compétition pour les études pilotes.

• Dr Altit has been invited, alongside colleagues Dr. Andréanne Villeneuve (CHU Sainte-Justine) and Dr. Audrey Hébert (CHUL) to present at the Société des néonatalogistes du Québec. They will be presenting on pulmonary hypertension in Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.  Dre Altit a été invité, aux côtés de ses collègues la Dre Andréanne Villeneuve (CHU Sainte-Justine) et la Dre Audrey Hébert (CHUL) à faire une présentation à la Société des néonatalogistes du Québec. Ils présenteront l'hypertension pulmonaire dans la dysplasie bronchopulmonaire.
