L’Initiative cardiovasculaire Lifespan du CMDO vise à rassembler les cliniciens, chercheurs, stagiaires et utilisateurs des connaissances à travers le Québec qui partagent un intérêt commun pour la santé cardiovasculaire tout au long de la vie. Ce collectif émergent cherche à créer des ponts entre des domaines de recherche traditionnellement distincts, allant de la physiologie cardiovasculaire fœtale et néonatale à la cardiologie pédiatrique, aux cardiopathies congénitales de l’adulte, à la cardiogénétique, à la prévention cardiovasculaire et à la santé cardiovasculaire à long terme. Sous l’égide du réseau CMDO, cette initiative vise à créer une communauté collaborative de chercheurs œuvrant au sein de différentes institutions, disciplines et groupes d’âge. L’objectif est de mettre en valeur l’expertise déjà présente au Québec, de favoriser l’émergence de nouvelles collaborations, de soutenir la formation de la relève et de promouvoir des projets de recherche qui abordent la santé cardiovasculaire dans une perspective intégrée, de la vie fœtale et néonatale jusqu’à l’âge adulte.


The CMDO Lifespan Cardiovascular Initiative aims to bring together clinicians, researchers, trainees, and knowledge users across Québec who share a common interest in cardiovascular health across the life course. This emerging collective seeks to bridge traditionally separated areas of research — from fetal and neonatal cardiovascular physiology to pediatric cardiology, adult congenital heart disease, cardiogenetics, prevention, and long-term cardiovascular health. Under the umbrella of the CMDO network, this initiative will create a collaborative community of researchers working across institutions, disciplines, and age groups. The goal is to build visibility around existing expertise in Québec, foster new collaborations, support trainee development, and promote research projects that address cardiovascular health from early life to adulthood.

Vision

Cardiovascular health is shaped across the lifespan. Conditions that begin in fetal life, infancy, childhood, or adolescence may have important implications for adult cardiovascular outcomes. Similarly, genetic, developmental, metabolic, and environmental factors can influence cardiovascular risk across generations. The CMDO Lifespan Cardiovascular Initiative seeks to connect researchers working at different stages of this continuum and to promote a truly integrated vision of cardiovascular research.


La santé cardiovasculaire se construit tout au long de la vie. Les conditions qui prennent naissance pendant la vie fœtale, la période néonatale, l’enfance ou l’adolescence peuvent avoir des répercussions importantes sur la santé cardiovasculaire à l’âge adulte. De même, les facteurs génétiques, développementaux, métaboliques et environnementaux influencent le risque cardiovasculaire à différentes étapes de la vie et parfois même d’une génération à l’autre. L’Initiative cardiovasculaire au long de la vie du CMDO vise à rapprocher les chercheurs travaillant à différents points de ce continuum et à promouvoir une vision véritablement intégrée de la recherche cardiovasculaire. En favorisant les collaborations entre les équipes œuvrant auprès des populations pédiatriques et adultes, l’initiative cherche à mieux comprendre les trajectoires cardiovasculaires de la vie fœtale jusqu’à l’âge adulte, afin d’améliorer la prévention, le diagnostic, les traitements et les résultats à long terme.

Proposed Research Axes - Axes de recherche proposés 

The initiative will initially focus on three complementary axes:

  • Congenital Heart Disease: This axis will bring together expertise in fetal, neonatal, pediatric, and adult congenital heart disease, with the goal of improving understanding of cardiovascular trajectories from diagnosis to adulthood.

  • Cardiovascular Genetics and Cardiogenetics: This axis will connect researchers and clinicians working on inherited cardiovascular conditions, family-based screening, precision medicine, registries, and genetic determinants of cardiovascular health.

  • Prematurity and Early-Life Cardiovascular Origins: This axis will focus on the cardiovascular consequences of prematurity and adverse perinatal exposures, including neonatal cardiovascular adaptation, pulmonary hypertension, ventricular development, and long-term cardiometabolic health.

L’initiative s’articulera initialement autour de trois axes complémentaires : 

  • Cardiopathies congénitales: Cet axe rassemblera les expertises en cardiologie fœtale, néonatale, pédiatrique et en cardiopathies congénitales de l’adulte. Son objectif est de mieux comprendre les trajectoires cardiovasculaires des personnes atteintes de cardiopathies congénitales, depuis le diagnostic prénatal ou postnatal jusqu’à l’âge adulte, afin d’optimiser les soins et les résultats à long terme. 

  • Génétique cardiovasculaire et cardiogénétique Cet axe réunira les chercheurs et cliniciens travaillant sur les maladies cardiovasculaires héréditaires, le dépistage familial, la médecine de précision, les registres cliniques et les déterminants génétiques de la santé cardiovasculaire. Il favorisera les collaborations visant à mieux comprendre les mécanismes génétiques des maladies cardiovasculaires et à améliorer leur prévention, leur détection et leur prise en charge. 

  • Prématurité et origines précoces de la santé cardiovasculaire Cet axe s’intéressera aux conséquences cardiovasculaires de la prématurité et des expositions périnatales défavorables. Les thématiques incluront notamment l’adaptation cardiovasculaire néonatale, l’hypertension pulmonaire, le développement cardiaque et vasculaire, ainsi que les répercussions cardiométaboliques à long terme. L’objectif est de mieux comprendre comment les événements survenant tôt dans la vie influencent la santé cardiovasculaire future.

Construire un communauté - Building a community

Construire une communauté québécoise de recherche cardiovasculaire tout au long de la vie 

Une première priorité consistera à identifier les cliniciens et les chercheurs des différents centres de recherche du Québec qui souhaitent contribuer à cet axe. En recensant les expertises existantes ainsi que les projets en cours, cette initiative favorisera la création de liens entre les équipes, les établissements et les disciplines. Cette structure collaborative permettra de soutenir : les collaborations de recherche interinstitutionnelles ; l’implication des étudiants et des stagiaires ; le développement de projets multicentriques ; le transfert des connaissances et le rayonnement des travaux ; le développement d’occasions de financement dédiées à la recherche cardiovasculaire tout au long de la vie au Québec. 

Building a Québec Lifespan Cardiovascular Research Community

A first priority will be to identify clinicians and researchers across Québec research centres who are interested in contributing to this axis. By mapping existing expertise and ongoing projects, the initiative will help create bridges between teams, institutions, and disciplines.

This collaborative structure will support:

  • inter-institutional research collaborations;

  • trainee and student involvement;

  • multicentre project development;

  • knowledge translation and visibility;

  • dedicated funding opportunities for lifespan cardiovascular research in Québec.

Le réseau CMDO constitue une plateforme importante pour soutenir cette démarche. Les possibilités de financement associées à cet axe contribueront à stimuler de nouvelles collaborations, à soutenir des projets pilotes et à favoriser l’implication des stagiaires dans la recherche cardiovasculaire tout au long de la vie. En créant une communauté visible, structurée et collaborative, cette initiative vise à renforcer le leadership du Québec en recherche cardiovasculaire à travers l’ensemble du parcours de vie.


Funding and Strategic Development

The CMDO network provides an important platform to support this endeavour. Dedicated funding opportunities within the axis will help catalyze new collaborations, support pilot projects, and promote trainee involvement in lifespan cardiovascular research. By creating a visible and structured community, the initiative aims to strengthen Québec’s leadership in cardiovascular research across the life course.

Expression of Interest Form – CMDO Lifespan Cardiovascular Initiative: Clinicians, researchers, trainees, and research teams interested in contributing to the CMDO Lifespan Cardiovascular Initiative are invited to complete the following form: CMDO Lifespan Expression of Interest Form This form aims to identify interested members across Québec, map existing expertise, and support the development of a collaborative research community focused on cardiovascular health across the lifespan.
