December 23rd, 2023 - Case of the Month - Case by Dr Pasinee Kanaprach (fellow neonatal hemodynamics - McGill University) and Dr Juliana Quintero Salazar (fellow neonatology - McGill University) regarding an infant of diabetic mother with severe biventricular and septal hypertrophy with obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract and systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve. 

23 décembre 2023 - Cas du mois - Cas du Dr Pasinee Kanaprach (fellow en hémodynamie néonatale - Université McGill) et Dre Juliana Quintero Salazar (fellow en néonatalogie - Université McGill) concernant un nourrisson de mère diabétique présentant une hypertrophie biventriculaire et septale sévère avec obstruction du la voie d'éjection du ventricule gauche et le mouvement antérieur systolique de la valve mitrale.

Un merci tout spécial à notre conférencière internationale invitée, Dre Adrianne Rahde Bischoff, d'avoir gracieusement accepté notre invitation à partager son expérience et son expertise inestimables dans le domaine de la fermeture du canal artériel utilisant des interventions par cathéter chez le plus petit des nourrissons. Nous exprimons également notre sincère gratitude à notre merveilleuse équipe d'accueil à Québec pour son organisation exceptionnel de l'événement et son hospitalité chaleureuse. Nos sincères remerciements vont au Dre Nina Nouraeyan pour avoir généreusement partagé avec nous ses connaissances et son expérience en échographie pulmonaire pendant la journée. Et surtout, félicitations aux étudiants pour leur merveilleux travail ! Nous avons tous été très impressionnés par leurs présentations et leurs travaux de recherche. Encore une fois, l'édition de cette année a célébré la collaboration exceptionnelle et le travail que nous avons entre les centres au Québec, ainsi que l'amitié extraordinaire qui unit nos efforts pour faire progresser le domaine dans un esprit de collaboration.

November 8th, 2023 - It was a true pleasure to be part of the Point of Care Ultrasound Course at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on November 3rd and 4th, 2023. I truly believe it is one of the best Pediatric POCUS workshop out there, with great hands-on practice and organization. A special thanks to Dr Maria Fraga and Dr Thomas Conlon for their exemplary leadership in organizing this course, for their generosity/hospitality, and for their warm invitation! The content is extremely exhaustive and covers a lot of POCUS applications. I had such a great time in Philadelphia! A special thanks to Dr Minso Kim, from UCSF, who sent me these pictures and who gave an outstanding talk on RV function. All the speakers were absolutely phenomenal. Stay tuned for future CHOP workshops on POCUS.

8 novembre 2023 - Ce fut un véritable plaisir de participer au cours d'échographie ciblée à l'hôpital pour enfants de Philadelphie les 3 et 4 novembre 2023. Je crois sincèrement que c'est l'un des meilleurs ateliers POCUS pédiatriques, avec des stations pratiques excellentes et une organisation exemplaire. Un merci tout particulier au Dre Maria Fraga et au Dr Thomas Conlon pour leur leadership exemplaire dans l'organisation de ce cours, pour leur générosité/hospitalité, et pour leur chaleureuse invitation ! Le contenu est extrêmement exhaustif et couvre de nombreuses applications POCUS. J'ai passé un très bon moment à Philadelphie ! Un merci spécial au Dre Minso Kim, de l'UCSF, qui m'a envoyé ces photos et qui a donné une conférence exceptionnelle sur la fonction VD. Tous les conférenciers étaient absolument phénoménaux. Restez à l'affut pour les futurs ateliers CHOP sur POCUS.

3 novembre 2023 - C'est un plaisir et un honneur de participer au cours Anesthesiology, Neonatology and Critical Care Medicine: Bedside Ultrasound Course – 2023 qui se déroule à l'hôpital pour enfants de Philadelphie. Je ferai une présentation sur "l'intégration des ultrasons dans la recherche en hémodynamie". Un merci spécial au Dre Maria Fraga, au Dr Thomas Conlon et à tout le comité organisateur pour leur chaleureuse invitation. Je discuterai brièvement de la collaboration en cours avec notre étude PUrPOSE (co-chercheur principal : Dr Maria Fraga) - "Point of Care Ultrasound in CDH: Predicting Outcomes and Success of Extubation".

1er novembre 2023 : J'ai le plaisir d'annoncer que je ferai partie de la session : Sous pression pour choisir le bon presseur chez le nouveau-né - Où sont les preuves ?, qui est un symposium sur des sujets brûlants qui a été accepté par la Pediatric Academic Societies pour présentation en 2024. Merci à Dre Stephanie Ford, qui a organisé la soumission pour cette session, aux côtés d'un panel d'experts exceptionnels : Dr Audrey Hébert, Dr Shazia Bhombal, Dr Satyan Lakshminrusimha et Dr Shiran Moore. October 17, 2023 - It is my pleasure to be part of the Bangkok International Neonatology Symposium 2024 Pre-Congress workshop on Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography. Registration is now open. It will take place on February 19-20, 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand.

28 septembre 2023 - Grande nouvelle pour le NeoCardioLab ! Nous tenons à remercier la subvention Nouvelles orientations en recherche, soutenue par Pédalez pour les enfants (Recherche en action) et la Fondation de l'hôpital de Montréal pour enfants, pour la subvention compétitive revue par un comité par les pairs concernant l'étude SAVING. Notre équipe a appris que nous avons obtenu cette subvention pour notre projet ! L'étude SAVING BABIES (Sonographic Assessment Validation study for Neonatal Global health improvement) est réalisée en collaboration avec : le Dr Irina Prelipcean (Université de Rochester), le Dr Pia Wintermark (McGill), le Dr Anie Lapointe (Université de Montréal), le Dr Wadi Mawad (McGill), le Dr Michelle Ryan (McGill) et le Dr Elisa Ruano Cea (McGill). Nous examinerons la validité des marqueurs échographiques obtenus à partir d'une machine portative à faible coût, comparée à une machine qui est le standard de pratique, comme une opportunité d'élargir les capacités de diagnostic dans les milieux à ressources limitées. Merci !

In recent weeks, we encountered Wi-Fi issues, and Philips promptly sent technicians for repairs. A special mention goes to Natalie Duplisea, an imaging specialist, who dedicated her day on September 19th, 2023, to enhance our presets and optimize our machine's performance, resulting in spectacular image quality. I'd also like to extend my gratitude to Florence Ouellet, Account Manager Eastern Canada, who streamlined our communication and support processes. Lastly, a big thanks to Vanessa Michaud, another imaging specialist, who has been invaluable in troubleshooting when needed. It's truly a spectacular team at Philips, and their support has been exceptional. A heartfelt thank you to all!

Le 19 septembre 2023 : En général, je n'ai pas l'habitude de mentionner des entreprises ou des fournisseurs spécifiques. Ici, au NeoCardioLab, nous présentons des extraits provenant de divers fournisseurs et machines pour mettre en avant des études réalisées avec différentes capacités d'équipement. Cependant, je tiens à exprimer ma sincère appréciation pour le soutien incroyable que nous avons reçu de la part de Philips concernant notre machine Epiq7, qui est au cœur de nos efforts de recherche. Nous utilisons cette machine pour l'échocardiographie 2D et 3D, l'échographie pulmonaire et l'échographie cérébrale. Au cours des dernières semaines, nous avons rencontré des problèmes de Wi-Fi, et Philips a rapidement envoyé des techniciens pour effectuer les réparations. Je tiens à mentionner tout particulièrement Natalie Duplisea, spécialiste de l'imagerie, qui a consacré sa journée du 19 septembre 2023 à améliorer nos paramètres prédéfinis et à optimiser les performances de notre machine, ce qui a donné lieu à une qualité d'image spectaculaire. J'aimerais également exprimer ma gratitude à Florence Ouellet, responsable de compte pour l'Est du Canada, qui a simplifié nos processus de communication et de soutien. Enfin, un grand merci à Vanessa Michaud, une autre spécialiste de l'imagerie, qui a été inestimable lorsqu'il a fallu résoudre des problèmes. C'est vraiment une équipe exceptionnelle chez Philips, et leur soutien a été exceptionnel. Un sincère merci à tous !

September 9th, 2023 - At the NeoCardioLab, our commitment to transparency in our research procedures is paramount. Therefore, we are openly sharing our data extraction and echocardiography measurement methodologies for all our research projects, and our targeted neonatal echocardiography. These measurements are designed to align with the established literature and adhere to the guidelines set forth by the American Society of Echocardiography and the Canadian Society of Echocardiography. The NeoCardioLab Atlas of measurements is now available here and in the Research section, under the "Other Research Resources". Available as well under the TnECHO - Normative Values page.

Le 9 septembre 2023 - Au NeoCardioLab, notre engagement envers la transparence dans nos procédures de recherche est primordial. July 18, 2023: I am delighted to announce that the summer season at NeocardioLab is in full swing! It brings me great joy to share the news of our recent celebratory events, the MCH-NICU division garden party at Dr Gosselin's home (Chief of Division) and the Welcome BBQ, which was organized to warmly welcome our new fellow, Dr. Pasinee Kanaprach, and to commemorate the successful completion of the program by Dr. Carolina Michel Macias. It provided us with a wonderful opportunity to recognize and applaud the achievements of Dr. Michel Macias, as she moves forward in her professional journey. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to her for her remarkable dedication and hard work throughout the program. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the exceptional team at NeocardioLab, as well as the dedicated members of the MCH and JGH NICU. Your unwavering support, commitment, and collaborative efforts have been instrumental in creating a nurturing and thriving environment for our fellows. Together, we strive to advance the field of neonatology and make a positive impact on the lives of the patients and families we serve. Once again, congratulations to Dr. Kanaprach on joining our team, and a special round of applause to Dr. Michel Macias for her accomplishments. A special thanks to Dr Valerie Biran, collaborator, who has been spending a year as a visiting professor in our division, ans worked on a project regarding hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. We are incredibly proud of our team and look forward to the exciting developments and discoveries that lie ahead.

June 22, 2023: We are pleased to announce that we are launching the SPEC study at CHU Sainte-Justine. We are now 3 centres: CHU Sainte-Justine, Montreal Children's Hospital and Soroka Medical Centre recruiting premature infants exposed to dexamethasone for their pulmonary management. We are attempting to evaluate the post-exposure cardiac and pulmonary evolution. We would like to thank all the collaborators to this project!

22 juin 2023 : Nous sommes heureux de vous annoncer que nous lançons l'étude SPEC au CHU Sainte-Justine. Nous sommes maintenant 3 centres : le CHU Sainte-Justine, l'Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants et le Centre médical Soroka recrutant des prématurés exposés à la dexaméthasone pour leur prise en charge pulmonaire. Nous tentons d'évaluer l'évolution cardiaque et pulmonaire post-exposition. Nous tenons à remercier tous les collaborateurs de ce projet !

31 mai 2023 : Un merci spécial pour l'invitation chaleureuse de l'équipe de l'Université de Rochester. Ce fut un réel plaisir de rencontrer tout le personnel du service de néonatologie de l'hôpital pour enfants Golisano du 3 au 5 mai 2023. Quel accueil et quelle hospitalité formidables. J'ai eu l'opportunité de faire une présentation sur "Prematurity: From the Early to the Life Long Cardiovascular Diseases". Un merci spécial au Dre Irina Prelipcean (responsable de l'hémodynamie néonatale), au Dre Rita Dadiz (directrice du programme de néonatologie), au Dr Carl D’Angio (chef de division) et à Kelly Maas (administratrice du programm de fellowship). Ce fut un réel plaisir de rencontrer et d'apprendre de toute votre équipe de professeurs, des chercheurs et des apprenants. Je suis certain que cela mènera à de futures collaborations.

You will find more content in the fetal atrioventricular septal defect section, fetal situs, fetal SVT, and Resources in Fetal Echocardiography sections. Also, there is now a fetal coarctation, fetal cardiac function, and a fetal Ebstein section.

March 19, 2023: Great editorial "Time to Stop Early Treatment of Patent Ductus Arteriosus?" by Carl H. Backes and Jonathan L. Slaughter on the BeNeDuctus trial results. Very interesting read. Similar to the recent text posted on here (see below - news of January 2023). My biased thoughts on NSAIDs for PDA here.

 PDA risk score = (Gestation in weeks × −1.304) + (PDA diameter in mm × 0.781) + (Left ventricular output in mL/kg/min × 0.008) + (maximum PDA velocity in m/s × −1.065) + (left ventricular a' wave in cm/s × −0.470) + 41.

Score ranges between 0 (low risk) and 13 (high risk).

Practices surrounding the PDA are controversial. However, many visitors of this portal may be using one of the available scores out there to establish hemodynamic significance of the ductus in the preterm population with a left to right PDA. As such, one of the most used and described score is the one derived by the Iowa group - who has extensive experience and has published numerous articles on the matter. You can now find the calculator for the Iowa PDA score, based from their most recent publication by their group (link here). Based on that score, a value ≥ 6 is considered indicating echocardiographic signs of hemodynamics significance.

March 9th, 2023: "NeoCardioLab Case of the Month". If you are interested in submitting your case - we will outline each month a case that was submitted on the NeoCardioLab portal. Cases can be diverse: fetal - neonatal. They can be related to hemodynamics, congenital heart defect, or fetal echocardiography. They can be related to function, cardiomyopathy, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, congenital heart defect, arrhythmias, etc. The case should be maximum 1500 words, without any patient identifiers (anonymized). The file should be in a word document and contain this information: Title Page, Case Description, Discussion, Bibliography. The title page should include the information regarding the author(s): name(s), institution(s), conflict of interest disclosure(s) and contact information. If you provide images of echocardiography, please provide the anonymized clip. You will be allowed to provide a maximum of 4 figures/clips (it could also be ECG, radiography, cath-based findings, MRI, CT, etc.). If sending a video - please make sure to send in MP4 or AVI format (ideally). The authors/institutions will be acknowledged and highlighted in the section of the "NeoCardiolab Case of The Month". If you wish to provide a link to your website/profile, please provide the information at the time of submission. Great opportunity for fellows and trainees to showcase their work and finding.
