Book Editor(s): Wyman W. Lai MD, MPH, MBA, Luc L. Mertens MD, PhD, Meryl S. Cohen MD, MS Ed and Tal Geva MD. Co-Authors: Dr Amir H. Ashrafi (CHOC) & Dr Patrick McNamara (Iowa). Dr Ashrafi really did a spectacular job outlining a great deal of the content in this chapter. Dr McNamara provided exceptional guidance, review and important adjustments to the content, improved by his extensive experience on the matter. I feel very privileged an honoured to have participated to such great work with inspirational colleagues!

Last article of 2021 by Daniela Ravizzoni Dartora under the laboratory of Dr Anne Monique Nuyt. "Cardiac Left Ventricle Mitochondrial Dysfunction After Neonatal Exposure to Hyperoxia: Relevance for Cardiomyopathy After Preterm Birth" in Hypertension. NeoCardioLab provided the expertise of speckle tracking echocardiography for this great project. "In the cohort, left ventricle ejection fraction and peak global longitudinal strain were similar between groups however humanin levels were lower in preterm and associated with left ventricle ejection fraction and peak global longitudinal strain".

2021 was a big year for the NeoCardioLab. Many publications, book chapters, articles reviewed, posters and oral presentations at conferences. We had the launch of our family section with interviews with previous family. We had the launch of our application on Iphone/Ipad and Google Android. Here below a little recap of 2021 in numbers.

I feel very honoured and privileged presenting this morning (December 17th, 2021) following an invitation by Dr Nagib Dahdah (Fondation BoBeauCoeur) at CHU Sainte-Justine. I presented on the genesis of the NeoCardioLab "Au cœur du NeoCardioLab - recherche, enseignement et application des connaissances" at the annual 2021 Pediatric Cardiology Research Day ("Journée de la recherche Clinique en cardiologie"). Thank you for allowing me to present and for benefiting from the various talks by brilliant experts in the field.

Je me sens très honoré et privilégié de présenter ce matin (17 décembre 2021) suite à une invitation du Dr Nagib Dahdah (Fondation BoBeauCoeur) au CHU Sainte-Justine. Ils fournissent leur perspective sur la prématurité, leur séjour à l'USIN et l'importance de la contribution de la famille dans l'équipe au chevet du nouveau-né. Florence a participé à un projet de recherche au NeoCardioLab (Chercheur principal: Gabriel Altit) sur l'hypertension pulmonaire chez les prématurés. Florence est maintenant à la maison - en santé - avec sa soeur et ses parents. Ses parents ont généreusement partagé leur histoire. Nous espérons que l'histoire de Florence et de ses parents inspirera les familles qui vivent potentiellement des défis similaires et un séjour à l'USIN. In the Story of our Families: Florence was born at 23 weeks and was admitted to the neonatal intensive care. Florence spent many months at the Montreal Children's Hospital. Her parents, Antoine and Elise, generously shared with us their story. They are providing some family insights on prematurity, NICU stay and how important the contribution of the family is in the team at the bedside. Florence participated in a research project at the NeoCardioLab (Principal Investigator: Gabriel Altit) on pulmonary hypertension in preterm infants. She is now home with her parents and her sister, and doing well. Her parents generously shared their story. We are hopeful that the story of Florence and her parents will inspire families that are potentially living similar challenges and a NICU stay. The perspective of families is extremely important and this interview was made to bring the perspective and experience of one family to others. We would like to thank Just for Kids foundation, Fondation Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie, Foundation of Stars and the Department of pediatrics of McGill University for their funding support in the NeoCardioLab research program. Noah was diagnosed before birth with congenital diaphragmatic hernia. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Carolina Michel will be joining the Neonatal Hemodynamics Clinical Research Fellowship program at McGill University in July 2022. Dr. Michel attended Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, School of Medicine, in Mexico. She completed her Pediatrics and Neonatology training at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in México City. She is currently working as an attending neonatologist in Querétaro, México. Welcome!

We have embarked in a very drastic conservative PDA management strategy in 2013 at our center. We recently published our outcomes from 2013 to 2017, compared to another unit who was having active PDA treatment and found a red flag regarding this practice in the <26 week newborns. However, despite that, our death or BPD rate in that subgroup was lower than the one of the other unit. Hence, following this analysis, we decided to collect data throughout the years 2017, 2018, 2019 to evaluate the outcomes in our center on death, BPD, respiratory support and granular information on their respiratory variables (with older and newer BPD definitions). These information were not available previously. We have found that, at least in our center, despite a non-interventional approach, our rates have significantly improved throughout the years (see Supplementary Table E - 61% death or BPD in 2019 for <26 weeks). Most importantly, we found that the vast majority of ductus will close even in those <26 weeks (table 2). The article is available here. This study has many limitations and I want to acknowledge them - observational, one center, retrospective, prone to time-bias, etc. It does outline how a PDA non-interventional policy should be considered as part a combination of various other clinical practice policies - and not as an isolated element of the practice. This study outlines that the PDA conundrum is far yet to be answered. Our rates of death or BPD in the <26 weeks are very comparable (if not better) than many units who are attempting acceleration of ductal closure. I am hopeful that the SMARTPDA and BeNeductus trials bring some other answers to that question. We truly need a RCT, blinded with a placebo (NSAIDs/Acetaminophen vs Placebo) in the 22, 23, 24, 25 weeks newborns. RCTs with an arm that has the possibility of "treatment to accelerate ductal closure" will not fully answer this question.

The book Hypoxic Respiratory Failure in the Newborn - From Origins to Clinical Management is now available. This is a brilliant book outlining some of the main concepts in cardio-respiratory care of the newborn. I participated to the chapter on congenital diaphragmatic hernia, which outlines some key concepts related to pulmonary hypoplasia, prognostication, management of pulmonary hypertension and hemodynamic evaluation during the post-natal transition. Please find more information in the CDH section of this portal.

This is the teaser towards the 2022 Conference, which will be in Brazil. October 2021 - Octobre 2021

Please visit the Family Section - Story of our families. In this section, families are sharing their story. These families have been in the NICU for various reasons and have participated to some of the research projects of the NeoCardioLab. They have agreed to share their stories and, sometimes, pictures of their journey. I want to thank them for being so generous in their allowing us to get to know them better. Some interviews will be in english, and others will be in french. More to come.

Our first story is the story of Teo. Teo was diagnosed before birth with congenital diaphragmatic hernia - a rare disease of the diaphragm where the abdominal contents herniate into the chest, which can limit the growth of the lung. Teo underwent a procedure during fetal life called: Fetoscopic Tracheal Occlusion, which aims to increase the size of the lungs. During the pregnancy, during his stay in neonatal intensive care and after his discharge, Téo and his family were taken care of by a multidisciplinary team of doctors (obstetrics, neonatology, surgery, pulmonology, gastroenterology), pharmacists, nurses, respiratory therapists, nutritionists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers, etc. After birth, Teo was hospitalized in the NICU at the Montreal Children's Hospital.

Teo is now home and healthy, with his parents Ode and Marko. He is followed at the integrated multi-disciplinary CDH clinic of the Montreal Children's Hospital. Teo participated to one of our research projects on better understanding pulmonary hypertension and cardiac growth in infants with CDH. Ode, Marko and Teo generously consented to share their stories with the world - to help prepare future families in the same situation, give hope, and give their input on their own journey. They also explain why they participated to research and share some of their stories of the before, during and after their stay in the neonatal intensive care unit. I want to thank them for being so generous with sharing their journey. We also thank Grand Defi Pierre Lavoie and Just For Kids Foundation for their support for the CDH Research project at the NeoCardioLab. We also want to thank Dr Pramod S. Puligandla, pediatric surgeon and Director of the CDH clinic, as well as the entire team of the Montreal Children's Hospital CDH clinic for their support and contribution to the research at the NeoCardioLab.

Notre premier témoignage est celui de la famille de Téo. Téo (témoignage en anglais) a été diagnostiqué avant la naissance avec une hernie diaphragmatique congénitale - une maladie rare du diaphragme où le contenu abdominal se déplace dans la poitrine, ce qui peut limiter la croissance des poumons. Téo a subi une intervention au cours de la vie fœtale appelée : Occlusion trachéale fœtoscopique, qui vise à augmenter la taille des poumons. Durant la grossesse, pendant son séjour en néonatalogie et après son congé, Téo et sa famille ont été pris en charge par une équipe multi-disciplinaire de médecins (obstétrique, néonatalogie, chirurgie, pneumologie, gastroenterologie), pharmaciens, infirmiers, inhalothérapeutes, nutritionistes, ergothérapeutes, physiothérapeutes, travailleurs sociaux, etc.

Après sa naissance, Téo a été hospitalisé à l'USIN de l'Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants. Téo est maintenant à la maison et en bonne santé, avec ses parents Ode et Marko. Il est suivi à la clinique intégrée multidisciplinaire d'hernie diaphragmatique de l'Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants. Téo a participé à l'un de nos projets de recherche qui vise à améliorer notre compréhension de l'hypertension pulmonaire et de la croissance cardiaque chez les nourrissons atteints de l'hernie diaphragmatique. Ode, Marko et Téo ont généreusement consenti à partager leurs histoires avec le monde - pour aider à préparer les futures familles dans la même situation, donner de l'espoir et partager leur propre histoire. Ils expliquent également pourquoi ils ont participé à la recherche et partagent certaines de leurs histoires du avant, pendant et après leur séjour à l'unité de soins intensifs néonatals. Je veux vous remercier infiniment pour avoir été si généreux avec nous dans le partage de votre histoire, de nous avoir ouvert sur votre famille. Nous remercions également le Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie et la Fondation pour enfants seulement pour leur soutien au projet de recherche sur les patients avec hernie diaphragmatique au NeoCardioLab. You will also find some wonderful resources and videos by our Lactation consultants at the Montreal Children's Hospital (Karine Hupé, Magdalena Arciszewska, Mireille Bechard and Amanda Camacho). Finally, we have uploaded the link to NeoBrainParents, for families of newborns that underwent therapeutic hypothermia in the context of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. This was developed by the NeoBrainLab of Dr Pia Wintermark.

We now offer modules on Tetralogy of Fallot with 3 cases (TOF no pulmonary stenosis, TOF mild pulmonary stenosis and TOF with MAPCAs), on pulmonary valvular stenosis and we added 2 cases to our TAPVR section, within our section on congenital heart defects.

We have now a family section, which is completely dedicated for the families that are going through neonatology. Some of the material has been developed by colleagues, in order to provide as much information and resources to the families visiting this portal. On this section, we will be having some testimonials from families that went through a NICU stay at the Montreal Children's Hospital. Many have participated in some of the research studies from the NeoCardioLab. We are looking forward for this section to be driven by family-partners and their child. If you wish to participate to this section, as a family, please contact us. Currently, we have uploaded some of the material regarding breastfeeding support that our lactation consultants at the Montreal Children's Hospital have developed for our own families.

It contains all the material and educational resources that we offer for free. We are hopeful that these resources will be of interest for educational purposes. I participated to this great initiative by medical students called: "What is your specialty". The interview is in French but outlines the reasons why I chose Neonatology as my career and passion. These podcasts/interviews available on Youtube and Spotify (in French), will hopefully convince some students starting in the world of Medicine, that neonatology is a wonderful field.

J'ai participé à cette belle initiative d'étudiants en médecine intitulée : "C'est quoi ta spécialité". L'entrevue est en français mais décrit les raisons pour lesquelles j'ai choisi la néonatologie comme carrière et passion. Ces podcasts/entrevues sont disponibles sur Youtube et Spotify (en français). J'espère que cela convaincra certains étudiants débutants dans le monde de la médecine, que la néonatologie est un domaine merveilleux.

Dr. Chock will be presenting at the MUHC-RI / CHHD on November 1st, 2021. She is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine in the Division of Neonatal and Developmental Medicine. She has been a core member of the NeuroNICU team at Stanford and has developed their near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) clinical monitoring program which began over 7 years ago. Dr. Chock’s leadership in the Neonatal NIRS Consortium has also advanced the use of NIRS monitoring by promoting clinical and research initiatives with a focus on educational webinars and growth of a community of neonatologists interested in regional tissue oxygenation. She has several publications related to neonatal neuromonitoring and NIRS and hemodynamics. She was NIH-funded to investigate NIRS monitoring in preterm anemic infants in the context of a multicenter clinical trial. Dr. Chock’s additional interests include the continuum of care from the fetal to neonatal period. She is a leader in the Pregnancy and Fetal Health Program at Stanford and Associate Program Director for Stanford’s Neonatal and Developmental Medicine fellowship program.


Dr. Amish Jain will be presenting at the MUHC-RI - CCHD on November 8th, 2021. Dr. Amish Jain works as a staff neonatologist and clinician scientist at the Sinai Health System/Tanenbaum-Lunenfeld Research Institute and as an Associate Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Toronto. He is also the site Director of the Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography Program in the NICU at Mount Sinai Hospital. During this time Dr. Jain also completed a PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology in the Department of Physiology at University of Toronto. Dr. Jain’s specific research interests are in the field of critical care, neonatal cardio-pulmonary physiology and functional echocardiography, particularly in the assessment and management of pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular function. Dr. Jain currently holds the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) and SickKids Foundation’s (SKF) New Investigator Research Grant for the study of chronic pulmonary hypertension in preterm neonates, an Investigator Initiated Research Grant from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals for establishing a Canadian national database for preterm neonates exposed to inhaled nitric oxide, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (Ontario) Clinician-Scientist Phase 2 award for his research program titled “Improving Management of Pulmonary hypertension and Right heart function in NeonaTes (IMPRINT)”, and is one of the principal applicants in two CIHR-funded national research projects on evaluation and management of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Canada. Dr. Jain also envisioned and co-founded the recently launched Neonatal Hemodynamic Research Center (NHRC), an international consortium of leaders and practitioners in the field of neonatal hemodynamics.

We now offer on the NeoCardioLab website some modules on Cardiac Assessment (as well as lung, and brain) using the Butterfly IQ+ in the context of newborn evaluation. The modules are built to show how to use the probe, the presents and the functions. As well as how to acquire the different views and do some of the measurements. These modules were created with Dr Anie Lapointe and Dr Pia Wintermark. Please feel free to share for educational purposes.

From "Rube Joe - Every Child Matters"

"PHYLLIS' STORY: the original orange shirt September 30th has been declared Orange Shirt Day annually, in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and well being, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. Phyllis (Jack) Webstad's story in her own words... I went to the Mission for one school year in 1973/1974. I had just turned 6 years old. I lived with my grandmother on the Dog Creek reserve. We never had very much money, but somehow my granny managed to buy me a new outfit to go to the Mission school. I remember going to Robinson’s store and picking out a shiny orange shirt. It had string laced up in front, and was so bright and exciting – just like I felt to be going to school! When I got to the Mission, they stripped me, and took away my clothes, including the orange shirt! I never wore it again. I didn’t understand why they wouldn’t give it back to me, it was mine! The color orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared and how I felt like I was worth nothing. All of us little children were crying and no one cared. I was 13.8 years old and in grade 8 when my son Jeremy was born. Because my grandmother and mother both attended residential school for 10 years each, I never knew what a parent was supposed to be like. With the help of my aunt, Agness Jack, I was able to raise my son and have him know me as his mother. I went to a treatment centre for healing when I was 27 and have been on this healing journey since then. I finally get it, that the feeling of worthlessness and insignificance, ingrained in me from my first day at the mission, affected the way I lived my life for many years. Even now, when I know nothing could be further than the truth, I still sometimes feel that I don’t matter. Even with all the work I’ve done! I am honored to be able to tell my story so that others may benefit and understand, and maybe other survivors will feel comfortable enough to share their stories. Today... Phyllis Webstad is Northern Secwpemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation (Canoe Creek Indian Band). She comes from mixed Secwepemc and Irish/French heritage, was born in Dog Creek, and lives in Williams Lake, BC. Today, Phyllis is married, has one son, a step-son and five grandchildren. She is the Executive Director of the Orange Shirt Society, and tours the country telling her story and raising awareness about the impacts of the residential school system. She has now published two books, the "Orange Shirt Story" and "Phyllis's Orange Shirt" for younger children. She earned diplomas in Business Administration from the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology; and in Accounting from Thompson Rivers University. Phyllis received the 2017 TRU Distinguished Alumni Award for her unprecedented impact on local, provincial, national and international communities through the sharing of her orange shirt story."

Fresh hot the press, the new "Bible" of Neonatology is now available - "Fetal and Neonatal Physiology - 6th edition". It can be obtained here. I have contributed, along with my co-authors: Dr Julie Autmizguine, Dr Francois Duhamel and Dr Sylvain Chemtob to the "Basic Pharmacology Principles" chapter. I want to give a special thank to Dr Chemtob who has been leading this initiative and for a chapter that is complete, updated and extremely well written, outlining some of the important principles of neonatal pharmacology.

Our new article: "Cardiac Dysfunction in Neonatal HIE Is Associated with Increased Mortality and Brain Injury by MRI" is now published in the American Journal of Perinatology. In this article, we outlined the critical link between cardiac dysfunction and brain injury in those infants with post-natal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy.

We are happy to announce the publication of two new articles on the use of Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in the context of prematurity. Surveillance by NIRS was shown to be associated with ultrasound markers of perfusion and blood flow - both at the level of the brain (with head ultrasound Doppler) and at the level of the aorta (aortic blood flow Doppler).

Thanks to the collaboration of l’École d’éducation internationale (EEI) in McMasterville and Ms. Chiasson (head of APS), several students responded to our study on diaphragmatic hernias. These brilliant students agreed to participate on a voluntary basis; completed questionnaires on their lifestyle / health habits and had an echocardiogram. Welcome to Dr Shiran Moore

Dr Shiran Moore was born and raised in central Israel and attended medical school at Tel Aviv University. She has completed a Pediatrics residency at Meir Medical Center in central Israel. From an early stage, she had an interest in Neonatology and proceeded to complete her fellowship in Neonatal-perinatal medicine at Meir Medical Center. During her training, she enjoyed taking part in and led multiple research projects. She has a special interest in teaching and she developed a program for simulation-based resident training during her fellowship. Welcome to Shiran in the Neonatal Hemodynamics Clinical Research Fellowship program at McGill!

La Dre Shiran Moore est née et a grandi dans le centre d'Israël et a fréquenté la faculté de médecine de l'Université de Tel Aviv. Elle a terminé une résidence en pédiatrie au Meir Medical Center dans le centre d'Israël. Dès le début, elle s'est intéressée à la néonatologie et a poursuivi sa formation en médecine néonatale et périnatale au Meir Medical Center. Au cours de sa formation, elle a aimé participer et diriger de multiples projets de recherche. Elle a un intérêt particulier pour l'enseignement et elle a développé un programme de formation des résidents par simulation pendant son stage. Bienvenue à Shiran dans le programme de recherche clinique en hémodynamie néonatale à l'université McGill!

English: Dr Punnanee Wutthigate has completed successfully the Neonatal Hemodynamics Clinical Research fellowship program. She completed her training in Neonatal-Perinatal medicine program at McGill prior to that and is joining a tertiary care neonatology team at Mahidol University, in Bangkok Thailand. Dr Punnanee Wutthigate is an exceptional physician, teacher and is promised to a brilliant academic career. I am convinced that she is the future of Neonatal Hemodynamics, which is a booming field of neonatology. During her year in Neonatal Hemodynamics, she has acquired the skills to lead a clinical research program centered around Neonatology, Echocardiography and Hemodynamics. During her year, she has learned neonatal echocardiography, has taught and presented countless of times, has developed a prospective Echo-based study (the SPEC trial), has worked countless of hours on all ongoing echo-based prospective studies and has already finalized a manuscript on neonatal coarctation (out of many other manuscript to comes). Punnanee has the highest standards of work ethics. She is dedicated, hard worker, has a team-based approach and is highly professional. She is a valued member of our team and, more importantly, of our McGill family, and will be dearly missed in the NICU at the MCH and JGH. We will continue collaborating with Punnanee Wutthigate in the future years and I am convinced that this is only the beginning of a fruitful academic partnership. We were so lucky to have you in our team. Congratulations Punnanee! The whole NICU team is proud of you!

Avant cela, elle a terminé sa formation en médecine néonatale et périnatale à McGill. Elle se joint à une équipe de néonatologie de soins tertiaires à l'Université Mahidol, à Bangkok, en Thaïlande. The NHRC is an "international network involving leaders in the field of neonatal hemodynamics in order to foster high quality collaborative research and quality improvement work focused at improving the hemodynamics care provided to neonates in intensive care units across the globe."

March 29th marks our annual Quebec - Targeted neonatal echocardiography day. Very exciting panel of experts that will enlighten us on Neonatal Echocardiography and Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic encephalopathy. This day was supported by the Society of Neonatologists of Quebec.

Congratulations to Dr Daniela Dartora and Dr Adrien Flahault for the publication in CHEST of the article: "Association of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and right ventricle systolic function in young adults born preterm". This study was a collaboration with Dr Anne-Monique Nuyt and Dr Thuy Mai Luu from CHU Sainte-Justine regarding the data cumulated for the HAPI cohort (Health of Adult Preterms Investigation). The manuscript outlines some of the long-term effect of prematurity on the right ventricular function.

We are happy to announce that our prospective study in the extreme premature population is now launched at CHU Sainte-Justine (co-PI: Dr Andréanne Villeneuve and Dr Anie Lapointe), as well as at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont (co-PI: Dr Brahim Bensouda). These sites are now joining the multi-centric study that is currently ongoing at MUHC (Montreal) and CHUL (Quebec City - Dr Christine Drolet and Dr Audrey Hébert). We have also launched our prospective study at CHU Sainte-Justine on the congenital diaphragmatic hernia population (thanks to Le Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie) for their support.

New learning module on Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) - Nouveau module d'apprentissage sur la spectroscopie à infrarouge (NIRS)

New section dedicated to point of care ultrasound (POCUS) and targeted neonatal echocardiography (TnECHO). The TnECHO section outlines new modules on normal neonatal echocardiography and will soon include cases.

Nouvelle section dédiée à l'échographie ciblée (POCUS) et à l'échocardiographie néonatale ciblée (TnECHO). La section TnECHO présente de nouveaux modules sur l'échocardiographie néonatale normale et comprendra bientôt des cas.

We have added a section on congenital heart defects. There is also a new learning module on pulmonary hypertension assessment.

We are currently looking for healthy newborns and children aged 4 months, 9 months, 3 years, 5 years, 7 years, 9 years, 11 years, 13 years, 15 years and 17 years as part of two studies at the Montreal Children's Hospital. The purpose of these studies is to assess cardiac function and pulmonary pressures by performing a cardiac ultrasound of about twenty minutes and which involves only one appointment. An ultrasound is painless and safe.

These ultrasounds will allow us to compare these data with vulnerable populations such as children born extremely premature and children born with a diaphragmatic hernia. We use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques. Participation is on a voluntary basis, any discovery requiring a more in-depth analysis will be referred to cardiology. Help us help the kids!

*** Note to high school students: participating in this study as a healthy subject on a voluntary basis may give you 3 hours of volunteering if you are part of an international program.

Nous sommes présentement à la recherche de nouveau-nés et d’enfants en santé âgés de 4 mois, 9 mois, 3 ans, 5 ans, 7 ans, 9 ans, 11 ans, 13 ans, 15 ans et 17 ans dans la cadre de deux études à l’hôpital de Montréal pour enfants. Ces études ont comme missions d’évaluer la fonction cardiaque et les pressions pulmonaires en effectuant une échographie cardiaque d’une vingtaine de minutes et qui n’implique qu’un seul déplacement. Une échographie est sans douleur et sans danger.

Ces échographies nous permettront de comparer ces données à des populations vulnérables comme les enfants nés extrêmement prématurés et les enfants nés avec une hernie diaphragmatique. Nous utilisons un appareil et des techniques à la fine pointe de la technologie. La participation est sur une base volontaire, toute découverte fortuite nécessitant une analyse plus approfondie sera référé en cardiologie. Aidez-nous à aider les enfants!

*** Avis aux étudiants du secondaire: la participation à cette étude en guise de sujet sain sur une base volontaire peut équivaloir à 3 heures de bénévolat dans le cadre d'un programme international.

  • We are happy to share with you that the second phase of the study Pulmonary vascular disease and cardiac performance in extreme preterm infants: A prospective cross-sectional study will be initiated early next week at the CHU of Quebec. We are also expecting to launch the study later this season at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital and CHU Ste-Justine. These hospitals will collaborate in the intra-hospital part of this project.

Our study started here at the Montreal Children's Hospital in October 2019 and despite the slowdown caused by Covid-19, 132 patients have since been recruited, and more than 200 cardiac ultrasounds have been performed as part of this study.

This is prospective cohort study where standard and advanced echocardiographic imaging is used for the following aims: Aim 1: To describe the prevalence and severity of cardiac dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension for the extreme premature population, in different independent neonatal and pediatric age groups, using a prospective study design during a 3-year period. Aim 2: To describe the comorbidities and neuro-developmental profile of these populations at the individual time-points and put this profile in the context of their cardiac performance by echocardiography.

  • Nous sommes heureux de partager avec vous que la deuxième phase de l'étude Maladie vasculaire pulmonaire et performance cardiaque chez les nourrissons extrêmement prématurés: une étude prospective sera initiée au début de la semaine prochaine au CHU de Québec. Nous prévoyons également lancer l'étude plus tard cette saison à l'hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont et au CHU Ste-Justine. Ces hôpitaux collaboreront dans la partie intra-hospitalière de ce projet.

Notre étude a débuté ici à l'Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants en octobre 2019 et malgré le ralentissement causé par Covid-19, 132 patients ont depuis été recrutés et plus de 200 échographies cardiaques ont été réalisées dans le cadre de cette étude.

Il s'agit d'une étude dans laquelle l'imagerie échocardiographique standard et avancée est utilisée pour les objectifs suivants: Objectif 1: Décrire la prévalence et la gravité du dysfonctionnement cardiaque et de l'hypertension pulmonaire pour la population prématurée extrême et ce dans différents groupes d'âge néonatals et pédiatriques indépendants; avec une étude prospective d’une période de 3 ans. Objectif 2: Décrire les comorbidités et le profil neuro-développemental de ces populations à différents moments et mettre ce profil dans le contexte de leur performance cardiaque par échocardiographie
